šļø āļø ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
Path to My Dreams
Objective: Help children understand that they have the power to shape their future by making decisions and taking small steps toward their goals. The activity will guide them through creating a "path" that represents how their choices lead them to their dreams.
Materials:
A large sheet of paper or poster board
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Small sticky notes or paper slips for writing goals and choices
Tape or glue for attaching notes to the poster
Optional: magazines for creating a collage (images of dreams or goals)
Steps:
Introduction (5 minutes):
Affirmation Talk: Start by introducing the affirmation "I control my destiny." Ask your child what they think it means to ācontrol your destiny.ā Explain that destiny refers to their future, and their choices today help shape what happens tomorrow.
Let them know that through their decisionsābig or smallāthey are always moving toward the life they want to create for themselves.
Create the "Path to My Dreams" Poster (15 minutes):
On a large sheet of paper or poster board, draw a winding path leading up to a big star or cloud at the top, labeled "My Dreams." Explain that the path represents the journey they take toward their goals, and the choices they make help them move along that path.
Ask your child to think about a few things they dream of or goals they have (e.g., learning a new skill, achieving something at school, a future career, a big adventure). Write these in the star/cloud at the top of the path.
Choices and Steps Along the Path (15 minutes):
On small sticky notes or paper slips, help your child write down some choices or steps they can take to move closer to their dreams. These could be simple, achievable actions like:
Reading a new book (to improve learning).
Practicing a sport or skill (if they want to get better at something).
Helping around the house (to develop responsibility).
Being kind to others (to build strong friendships).
Attach each sticky note or paper slip along the path leading up to their dreams, showing that each small step brings them closer to what they want to achieve.
As you place each step along the path, remind them that every choice they make is moving them toward their future.
Reflection on Control and Destiny (10 minutes):
Once the path is filled, talk about how they are in control of the steps they take. Ask reflective questions like:
How do the choices you make today help you get closer to your dreams?
What are some choices you can make when things donāt go the way you planned?
How do you feel knowing that your decisions shape your future?
Reinforce that while challenges may come up, they always have the power to make decisions that move them in a positive direction.
Adding New Steps and Adjusting the Path (Ongoing):
Encourage your child to add new steps or choices to the path over time. If they make a new decision or achieve a small goal, they can add it to the path as a reminder that theyāre in control of their progress.
If they face challenges or setbacks, remind them that they can always make new decisions that help them adjust their courseābecause they control their destiny.
Affirmation Wrap-Up (5 minutes):
End by repeating the affirmation together: "I control my destiny."
Encourage your child to look at their path whenever they need a reminder that they are in charge of their future, and that each step they take brings them closer to their dreams.
Why This Works:
Visual Representation of Choices: The "Path to My Dreams" gives children a tangible way to see how their decisions contribute to their future, making the idea of controlling their destiny more concrete.
Empowerment Through Action: By identifying small, achievable steps, children realize that they are always in control of their progress and can make positive decisions.
Building Decision-Making Skills: The activity teaches children that setbacks are part of the journey, but their ability to make new choices empowers them to keep moving forward.
This activity helps children live out the affirmation "I control my destiny" by guiding them through the process of setting goals and recognizing that each step they take today shapes the future they want to create.
