šļø āļø ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
My Beautiful and Unique Self
Objective: Help children appreciate their own uniqueness and beauty by exploring what makes them special, both inside and out, through creative art and thoughtful reflection.
Materials:
A large piece of paper or poster board for each child
Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
Stickers, glitter, or any decorative supplies (optional)
A mirror (optional)
A small notebook or journal for a "Unique Qualities List"
Steps:
Introduction (5 minutes):
Affirmation Talk: Start by introducing the affirmation "I am beautiful and unique." Ask your child what they think it means to be "beautiful" and "unique." Share that beauty isnāt just about how we lookāit's also about who we are inside and the special qualities that make us one-of-a-kind.
Explain that today they will explore what makes them beautiful and unique through a fun art project and some reflection.
Create a "Beautiful and Unique" Poster (15-20 minutes):
Give your child a large piece of paper or poster board. In the center, have them write their name or "I Am Beautiful and Unique!" at the top.
Let them decorate the paper using crayons, markers, and any decorative supplies. Encourage them to fill the space with drawings, words, or symbols that represent things they love about themselves. They could include:
Physical features they like (e.g., their smile, hair, or eyes).
Personality traits theyāre proud of (e.g., being kind, creative, funny, or brave).
Talents or hobbies they enjoy (e.g., singing, dancing, reading, or sports).
Reflection Time: Unique Qualities List (10 minutes):
Together, make a "Unique Qualities List" in a small notebook or journal. Ask questions like:
What is something you can do that makes you special?
What is one thing you love about your personality?
What is something you have that makes you feel proud?
Write down their answers, highlighting both their inner beauty (kindness, helpfulness, etc.) and their unique traits (skills, talents, or physical features).
Reassure them that everyone is unique in their own way and that's what makes the world beautifulābecause no two people are exactly the same!
Mirror Affirmation Activity (5-10 minutes):
If you have a mirror, stand in front of it with your child and encourage them to look at themselves. Together, say the affirmation: "I am beautiful and unique."
Ask them to point out one thing they love about their reflectionāwhether it's a feature they like or the way their smile makes them feel happy.
Encourage positive self-talk by repeating the affirmation, emphasizing that beauty comes from within and is shown through their actions and who they are.
Compliment Exchange (5-10 minutes):
To reinforce the idea that everyone is beautiful and unique, have a quick compliment exchange. Give your child a compliment about something you admire in themāwhether itās their kindness, how they make you laugh, or how they work hard at something they love.
Ask your child to return the compliment, either about you or about someone else they know. This helps them see beauty in others, too, while feeling valued.
Affirmation Wrap-Up (5 minutes):
End the activity by repeating the affirmation together one more time: "I am beautiful and unique."
Tell them how proud you are of all the things that make them special, reminding them that their beauty and uniqueness shine through everything they do.
Why This Works:
Encourages Self-Love: The activity gives children the opportunity to reflect on the things they love about themselves, building self-esteem and reinforcing a positive self-image.
Creativity and Self-Expression: By creating their own "Beautiful and Unique" poster, children get to visually express who they are, making the affirmation more tangible.
Positive Reflection: The mirror activity helps children connect their internal and external beauty, while the compliment exchange reinforces the idea that everyone is unique in their own way.
This activity empowers children to live out the affirmation "I am beautiful and unique" by recognizing and celebrating the qualities that make them special, helping them build confidence and self-appreciation.
